Capsule Filling Device
This is the smallest tier of capsule filling. It sits below semi-auto machines: handheld tampers, manual tray devices, and benchtop pneumatic units. I reach for them when volume is low and flexibility is high.

RSD here is operator-dependent; a trained pharmacy tech held 4% on a tray device versus 8% for a new hire. Training, not the tool, sets the floor.
For 500 capsules of a patient-specific compound, a production filler needs purge, changeover and validation that cost more than the batch. A benchtop device does it in minutes. We timed a pharmacy preparing 300 capsules at 22 minutes door-to-door on a pneumatic benchtop versus an estimated 3-hour setup on a semi-auto.
Middle East, hospital pharmacy: A UAE hospital used benchtop pneumatic devices for low-volume, patient-specific capsules under local compounding rules; accuracy held ±5% at 100 mg, replacing manual spooning at ±18%.
Southeast Asia, R&D screen: A Philippine lab used manual trays for 200-capsule formulation samples, iterating 10 blends a day — impossible on a validated production filler.
Local pharmacy law: compounding devices follow national pharmacy boards, not full GMP line rules.
EU GMP: only if the device feeds commercial supply — then it needs validation like any filler.
FDA 21 CFR 211: commercial use requires suitability; R&D/compounding is scoped separately.
CE 2006/42/EC: pneumatically assisted devices need basic guarding.
ISO 9001 / ISO 13485: device-grade commercial use needs 13485; pharmacy use typically does not.
Operators expect machine-grade RSD from a manual tray — it depends on training.
Benchtop units lack data capture, failing audits if used for commercial product.
Buying a production filler for pharmacy-volume work wastes capex.
Using a manual device for commercial batches — no validation, no data.
Buying a production filler for pure R&D/compounding — overkill and slow.
Assuming RSD is fixed; it tracks operator skill on manual devices.
Handheld (lowest cost, lowest control) → manual tray (good for samples) → benchtop pneumatic/auger (best low-volume control). For any volume above ~10k caps/day, step up to a semi-auto machine.
Match the device to use: compounding/R&D → benchtop; commercial → machine with data.
For low-dose R&D, prefer a benchtop auger for better RSD.
Train operators; measure their RSD before trusting the device's nominal figure.
If commercial use is possible later, buy a logged semi-auto instead.
